Hey there guys, this articial is about formations, and should help out with understanding a little.

Toe Start, lets understand Loose, and Tight formations.
Loose formations are when you spread or gap between units in your formation.
Tight formations, and when you don't gap, and keep them as close to each other as possible.

Tight formations excel at minimizing damage done tell your in close, but lose against splash damage based weapons.

Loose formations, Excel at minimizing splash damage, but offer possibility of being picked off.

Formation Types, and Their Purposes.

Take a look at the following
Understanding Formations 101 Format10

Line formation Excels at maximizing damage, and is over used as an aggressive, offensive stance, that counters most stances. It is weak to Turtose Stance

Turtose, or Block formation excels at defense, and protecting members in this formation, But is weak to flanks, and splash damage.

Wedge formation, Excels at optimizing pushing power, covers flanks, and gives good sight /angle of attack however it is weak to rear flanking.

Echelon Formation is one of if not, the best base hitting formations for close range weapons. Its ment for hitting a base and taking out or wiping an entire sides defenses. It however, is weak to the open side as flanks.

Split V, is ment for splitting into two groups, and flanking. it starts off as a strong attack position (Arrow formation) then can open up, allowing 3 to go left, and 3 right, flanking the sides. This is probably the best counter for Turtose formation
